SCORECARD | Orlando Pirates versus Maritzburg United
Vincent Pule came off the bench at halftime to secure a brace and scored his first goal with a strong finish in 59 minutes before Maritzburg goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt scored a second goal, 78 minutes ahead.
The result shows that Pirates rises to fourth place in the league with 38 points from 22 games and Maritzburg is 13th with 20 points from 21 games, three points ahead of relegation.
Pirates increased the score, but Engelhardt made several excellent late saves as he saw little action throughout the tie.
The Team of Choice was the quickest out of the blocks when Thabiso Kutumela tested Wayne Sandilands early on when Daylon Claasen shot past the Bucs gate after another visitor attack.
Kabelo Dlamini was next wide, while Engelhardt’s outstretched leg denied Deon Hotto after being kicked in by an excellent long pass from Buc’s center-back Thabiso Sesane, who made his full debut for the Buccaneers.
Hotto shot wide early in the second half before Tshegofatso Mabasa failed to deflect his shot from a good Hotto cross from the left into the goal.
However, Pule made no mistake with a left-footed volley from an excellent Fortune Makaringe delivery from the right to finally break the impasse.
Bongokuhle Hlongwane should have scored for Maritzburg in the 71st minute, but he threw his side foot over the ball from two meters when the ball fell on him after a knockdown by Clayton Daniels after Ryan Raes long throw-in.
Engelhardt then completely misjudged the flight of the ball when it came out of the gate to keep his head free, and Pule picked up the loose ball and pushed it home.
The away goal sought after his previous mistake to dismiss Onassis Mntambo, Makaringe and Mabasa in quick succession after some relentless pirates attacked as the game ended.
