It was a bad day, week, month for Rep. Matt Gaetz. Last Tuesday’s New York Times report on allegations of sex trafficking dropped a cherry bomb on Gaetz’s toilet, starting the news cycle every politician fears. We’re sure more is to come, but so far every day, seemingly every hour, has brought new twists and turns to this tricky, but completely unsurprising saga.

Before his rise among the Trumperati, which gave him the opportunity to really indulge in his fucking on a national stage (swimming around in a gas mask on the floor of the house in March 2020 to “own” those demanding COVID protocols , and invite a defendant, white nationalist and Union State Holocaust denier; breaking into a secure room in the Capitol Building to disrupt impeachment hearings – while livestreaming his phone; MSNBC tells MSNBC that “there is tin and trash all over Haiti “), Gaetz was best known in Florida for the various DUIs he’d gotten out of thanks to his wealthy father, Rep. Don Gaetz. (And for the Points-for-Boinks game, he’s lined up under the Tallahassee Brother Caucus; more on that below.)

Here are some of the stories from Gaetz ‘septem horribilis. Many happy returns.

Tuesday March 30th: “Florida MP Matt Gaetz is reportedly being investigated into a relationship with a 17-year-old girl.”

Congressman Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida who was literally the only person to vote against a non-partisan sex trafficking law from 2017, is reportedly under investigation for having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and against laws the trial violates sex trafficking.

The investigation began during President Donald Trump’s tenure under former Attorney General William Barr, and it focuses on an alleged relationship between Gaetz and a 17-year-old girl in 2019, according to a report in the New York Times Florida Congresswoman paid to cross state lines in violation of federal sex trafficking laws.

The investigation is part of a larger investigation by former Seminole County tax collector and Gaetz friend Joel Greenberg, who was charged with 14 criminal offenses last year of prosecuting a political opponent, using a government database to create fake IDs, and trafficking in sex operate minors between the ages of 14 and 17, reports the Times.

Gaetz told the publication that the Justice Department had informed his lawyers that he was the subject and not the target of the Greenberg investigation. “I only know that it has to do with women,” Gaetz told the Times. “I suspect someone is trying to classify my generosity towards ex-girlfriends as something more uncomfortable.”

This is not the first time that Gaetz has been accused of sexual misconduct. Last year Florida State Representative Chris Latvala accused the Congressman of designing a “game” with a point system for “sleeping with aides, interns, lobbyists and married lawmakers.” The game, first reported by the Miami Herald, earned one point for sex with a lobbyist, two for an employee, three for another lawmaker, and six for a married lawmaker.

At the time, Gaetz denied to the Tampa Bay Times that he created, had knowledge of, or participated in the game.

Wednesday March 31: “Florida MP Matt Gaetz swims with DOJ blackmail plot in bizarre ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ interview about sex trafficking investigation”

A drowning person often appears calm, at least when compared to the beat-up, screaming depictions we see on television. One giveaway that lifeguards are sought after is climbing an invisible ladder. Panicked swimmers won’t press anything and try to create space between themselves and the water. This can lead to rescue efforts where the swimmer tries to mount anyone who tries to help them and squeeze them under them to get a second more air.

All of this means that Matt Gaetz definitely looked like he was drowning in a bizarre interview on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight on Tuesday. Among the Polish layers who made him look like an animatronic preacher from Texas to the saddest Chuck E. Cheese in the world, Gaetz sweated as he railed about blackmail schemes and possible links between the Biden government and a reported sex trafficking investigation .

Carlson invited Gaetz to his show. The environment couldn’t be friendlier, as Carlson admitted he had no questions for Gaetz and gave him a free hand to present his case.

Gaetz hit the Ministry of Justice and the host of the show and pressed everything he could get his hands on. He named former DOJ employee David McGee and said he asked Gaetz for money to sweep these allegations under the rug.

“I know that there was a demand for money in return for the promise that he and his co-conspirators could bring this investigation to a standstill,” said Gaetz. “They even claimed to have certain connections within the Biden White House. I don’t know if that’s true, they promised Joe Biden would forgive me. Obviously, I don’t need an apology.”

It can be hard to tell how Carlson feels about what a guest is saying. Much has been made of his calm face, which was deeply confused. But after the interview ended, Carlson called the segment “one of the weirdest interviews I’ve ever conducted”.

After the interview, Gaetz doubled his blackmail story on Twitter.

Thursday April 1: House managers Nancy Pelosi and Kevin McCarthy agree that if the sex trafficking allegations are true, MP Matt Gaetz should be exempted from committee positions.

Matt Gaetz now knows what it’s like to be stuck in a room with him. Like all unhappy souls who have ever heard the self-described “fire blight” of Florida, Gaetz’s situation is getting darker by the second.

The final blow to the conservative and professional troll in Florida came through the leadership of the House of Representatives. Spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi said the ethics committee should investigate allegations that Gaetz had an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old girl. During a press conference on April 1, the House’s top Democrat said that if the allegations are true, Gaetz should be stripped of his committee positions.

“Of course, if these allegations are true, the least that can be done is to be removed from the Judiciary Committee,” Pelosi said during a press conference on The Hill. “But I think from what we’ve heard so far, this would be an ethics committee matter.” (Could there just be a touch of sweet, sweet vengeance for Gaetz filing an ethics complaint against Pelosi after tearing a copy of Trump’s speech on the state of the Union in half? You get to the queen you best not miss.)

The generally unpopular politician will find no help from his own party. Kevin McCarthy, minority chairman of the House of Representatives, told Fox News that if the allegations turned out to be true, they would not stand in the way of his removal.

Gaetz could not only lose his leverage in Congress, but could also be charged with misusing campaign funds. The same investigation that investigates whether Gaetz induced a minor to cross state borders for the purpose of sexual intercourse, which corresponds to the federal standard for sex trafficking, also examines whether Gaetz misused campaign funds or not. CNN’s Evan Perez reports that investigators are investigating the source of funds that may have been used to illegally pay for travel and expenses.

Friday April 2: “Florida MP Matt Gaetz reportedly showed lawmakers nude photos of women he allegedly slept with.”

It’s gotten a bit proud among the locals that even our Petit Boug are just well-heeled iterations of Florida Man. Our local politicians are downright stranger than most other places to reflect the character of the place they are supposed to represent. Even so, there are unwritten rules for the tone of famous Florida Man stories, and likewise, that pride only applies as long as people are not harmed. It’s hard to laugh with a crawl through and through. Regardless of all the avenues of crime, Florida House rep Matt Gaetz appears to be a real problem. According to the latest reports, Gaetz showed his colleagues nude photos of women he allegedly slept with.

Two unnamed sources told CNN that they were shown the photos and videos directly. All anonymous tipsters shared that Gaetz was a well-known braggart when it came to his relationships. One of the sources got specific and stated that there was a video of a naked woman doing hula hooping.

These allegations have nothing to do with the Justice Department’s ongoing investigation into the congressman.

The Times history shows [Joel] Greenberg connects Gaetz with women he met on various platforms for Sugar Daddy, where women connect with wealthy men who exchange gifts, money and other expenses for dates. According to the sources, Gaetz had sex with several women he met through Greenberg and paid for through money transfer apps.

Some of the women who spoke to The Times claim that Gaetz fell into ecstasy during their encounters. This is not the first time that Gaetz has been accused of illegal drug use by connoisseurs. A recent Daily Beast article paints a similar picture.

Gaetz, for his part, denied the allegations through his office. “Matt Gaetz never paid for sex,” said the statement shared with The Times. “Matt Gaetz completely rejects all disgusting allegations. Matt Gaetz has never been to such websites. Matt Gaetz values the relationships in his past and looks forward to marrying the love of his life.” He claims the initial leak of the DOJ’s investigation into whether or not he had an inappropriate relationship with a minor was part of a blackmail scheme to incriminate his family for money. In an interview with Tucker Carlson and subsequent tweets, Gaetz asked the DOJ to post tapes that would prove his family was the target of an extortion program.
