Rapper DaBaby dived headlong into the music, making a sharp turn from petty crime and legal issues to full-time rap with no prior experience. From 2015 under the name Baby Jesus, but soon changed to DaBaby, the rapper from Charlotte, North Carolina, raided the music industry with constant mixtape releases and provided tracks such as the “Light Show” in 2016 and appearances on South by Southwest in 2015 für Wellen and 2017. His style became harder and more aggressive with the increasing discography, whereby melodic and carefree flows became more self-confident and fluid through the Blank Blank mixtape of 2018.
DaBaby was born Jonathan Kirk in 1991 in Cleveland, Ohio. He had moved to Charlotte when he was six and spent his youth doing street life. In December 2014, Kirk made a quick decision to become a rapper. He took the name Baby Jesus and released his non-fiction mixtape a month later. He had never been on stage before, in spring 2015 he traveled from southwest to south and made a name for himself with his visceral live performances. Kirk changed his name to DaBaby and explained the “political reasons” for this decision in the lyrics to “DaBaby (Intro)”, a brief introduction to God’s Work Resurrected 2016, his first mixtape under the new name. That release featured a cameo by Boosie Badazz and caught the attention of fans and peers alike.
In the coming months, several mixtapes followed with 2017 offers for billion dollar baby, baby talk, baby talk 2, 3 and 4 as well as Back on My Baby Jesus Sh! 2018 was similarly successful with Baby Talk 5 and Blank Blank. That November, Kirk was approached by several men while shopping with his family at a Walmart in Huntersville, North Carolina. An altercation broke out and shots broke out, in which 19-year-old Jalyn Domonique Craig died. While involved in the dispute, Kirk did not admit to having fired the fatal shots and was not charged with any crime related to the incident.
DaBaby’s regional recognition and endless hustle and bustle resulted in a major label deal in 2019 when he signed up with Interscope. The label quickly released the Billboard 200 top ten hit Baby on Baby in March of that year, a hotly produced full-length album preceded by increasingly surreal videos for singles “Suge” and “Walker, Texas Ranger”. After a number of features, DaBaby returned to solo work in September this year and released the introspective single “Intro”. “Intro,” a deeply personal track dealing with his father’s death, became the first single from his second album, KIRK. With major label contributions from Nicki Minaj, Chance the Rapper and Migos, the album was released later that month and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200. DaBaby received two Grammy nominations for “Suge,” Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. In April 2020, he returned with his third studio album, Blame It on Baby, which included performances by Future, A Boogie with Hoodie, Ashanti, Megan Thee Stallion, and others. The album featured the Billboard Hot 100 single “Rockstar” starring Roddy Ricch. ~ Fred Thomas (for Tidal)
