METAIRIE, La. (AP) – A person walked into a gun shop and shooting range in suburban New Orleans and fatally shot two people on Saturday, prompting customers and employees to open fire on the shooter, a sheriff said. The shooter died too.

The shooting took place around 2:50 p.m. at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in the suburbs of Metairie, according to a notice from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said the shooter first met two people inside, and then several other people – whether employees or business customers – opened fire on the shooter both inside and outside the building. In front of the building, behind a yellow police tape, a man could be seen shouting: “Where is my son?”

Guns and ammunition are sold outside the point of sale that leads through Jefferson Parish to a main street. Customers who want to visit the shooting range usually go to the side entrance of the building. Employees who work there often carry a side arm.

Lopinto said two other people were also shot and taken to the hospital in stable condition. He said there were several shooters.

“We’re trying to put everything together,” said the sheriff during a brief briefing with journalists.

None of the dead or wounded were identified immediately and details remained unclear.

Tyrone Russell and Wanetta Joseph were both on a hide and seek course in the store when they heard what they both called rapid fire. They said the gunfire sounded a lot louder than the usual muffled shooting they are used to at the rifle range.

“We heard the gunshots and the screaming,” said Russell. “When the police came, they took us out. I could see glass everywhere … It was like a really scary scene. “

“It got extremely loud, almost like a bomb,” said Joseph, who hid under a table with other students – without knowing whether there were several shooters or whether there was one near the classroom. One instructor stayed with the students while two others left the room and headed for the sound of gunfire.

Russell said when he was taken out he could see a man in the parking lot near his car who was hit by bullets. He described seeing broken glass and cartridge cases in the store.

The store was surrounded by warning tape to prevent viewers from approaching the scene where ambulances and numerous police vehicles had gathered. A neighboring Taco Bell restaurant had been evacuated.

Authorities stayed at the scene as night fell.

Metairie is a major New Orleans suburb about five miles west of the city’s famous French Quarter, in the neighboring jurisdiction of Jefferson Parish.
