NEW YORK (AP) – New coronavirus vaccination sites continue to open in New York City. However, with few shots fired, it remains unclear whether adding more clinics will more than increase the number of people vaccinated.

The New York Mets home, Citi Field, was the newest place to offer COVID-19 vaccinations on Wednesday, followed by the steps of Yankee Stadium.

However, lack of supply means that only a few hundred people a day can initially shoot in the stadium.

The Citi Field Hub will be reserved for taxi drivers, food service workers and other residents of Queens County who are eligible to vaccinate, including “key staff who gave us their all through this crisis,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio after viewing the site ˅.

Shortly after the first vaccinations were carried out at Citi Field, Governor Andrew Cuomo and White House officials announced they would open two more vaccination sites in Brooklyn and Queens on February 24 to expand access to vulnerable minority communities.

According to Cuomo, the state hopes to vaccinate up to 3,000 people a day at each location with doses from a “special federal allocation”.

If the state hits that target without firing shots from elsewhere, it would be a welcome increase in vaccination capacity. In the past few days, all of the vaccination sites operated by New York City combined only about 31,000 shots a day.

“These new centers will focus on serving the hardest-hit and hard-to-reach populations,” said Jeff Zients, White House coronavirus coordinator.

However, the question arose as to why the federal and state governments opened new locations instead of simply distributing more doses to existing programs that had to operate under capacity due to insufficient vaccine supplies.

De Blasio said he found the state’s proposed locations at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn and York College in Queens “fantastic,” largely because both were part of an effort to promote vaccination among black New Yorkers, which is doing a lot have lower rates than whites.

However, De Blasio added that he is “trying to find a simpler approach to the city where we can simply get direct allocation and make choices where the need is greatest”.

Yankee Stadium opened last week as a mass vaccination site and is only available to Bronx residents who meet New York State criteria for eligibility to vaccinate.

De Blasio said he hoped more vaccine doses would be relocated to Citi Field so the site could vaccinate thousands of people daily, of the only 250 he said could get gunshots on Wednesday.

“We can give 4,000 doses a week at this point until next week,” said the mayor, who was flanked by team mascots Mr. Met and Mrs. Met. “But when we got enough vaccine, we will be.” Here at Citi Field, 5,000 doses are administered per day. “

Despite the relatively modest start to efforts, de Blasio described the vaccination opening day at Citi Field as “the beginning of something big”.

In a riff on the movie Field of Dreams, he added, “If vaccinations are here, people will come here. If you build it they will come. “
